The Atlético de Madrid player Koke Resurrección, the Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, the journalist Alfredo Relaño and the doctor Pedro Guillén will be some of the winners at the VII Annual Awards Gala of the Sports Press Association of Madrid (APDM ), which will be delivered this Monday (8:00 p.m.) at the Beatriz Madrid Auditorium in the Spanish capital.
The journalist Alfredo Relaño, former director of the newspaper As and former sports manager for El País, Cadena Ser and Canal Plus, will receive the ‘Professional Career Award’, while doctor Pedro Guillén will be awarded the ‘Medicine and Sports Award’ for “a lifetime dedicated to the care and attention of athletes”.
In addition, midfielder Luka Modric will also be awarded for his four titles last season with Real Madrid (Champions League, LaLiga Santander, Spanish Super Cup and European Super Cup) and his third place with Croatia in the World Cup in Qatar; Koke Resurrección, for becoming the footballer with the most games in the history of Atlético de Madrid (563 so far); and the Spanish men’s basketball team, for the Eurobasket 2022 title.
The APDM will also recognize the work of LaLiga Impulso, for the “endowment of almost 2,000 million euros that will allow professional clubs to face the improvement and modernization of their infrastructures”; and the national athletics team, for their 12 medals won between the Eugene World Cups (2) and the Munich European Championships (10).
Madrid-based canoeist María Corbera, a member of the Spanish canoeing team, won silver and bronze at the Halifax World Cup (Canada), and double gold medal and one silver at the European Championship in Munich; and the eleven players from Madrid who are members of the under-17 and under-20 women’s soccer teams, world champions in their respective categories. The Acciona Open de España de Golf will be recognized as the best sporting event of 2022.
In addition to the above, two distinctions (plaques) will be delivered to the Madrid City Council and to CETURSA-Sierra Nevada. To the first, “for keeping Madrid in the international spotlight through sport” and on the occasion of having been nominated World Capital of Sport; to the second, for its Strategic Plan 2020/2030, Sierra Nevada.
This will be the VII edition of the Madrid Sports Press Association Gala, whose awards are intended to “recognize the contribution made in favor of sport during 2021 and 2022 by all the agents involved in this activity: athletes , companies, entities, clubs and journalists”.
Present at the gala will be the president of LaLiga, Javier Tebas; that of Atlético de Madrid, Enrique Cerezo; that of the Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE), Miguel Carballeda; that of the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA), Raúl Chapado; that of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG), Gonzaga Escauriaza; and that of the Royal Spanish Canoeing Federation (RFEP), Javier Hernanz.
Among the political authorities, the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, the General Director of Sports Alicia Martín and the Councilor for Sports Sofía Miranda will attend; the Deputy Minister of Sports of the Community of Madrid, Alberto Tomé, and the General Director of Sports Fernando Benzo; the general director of the Higher Sports Council (CSD), Fernando Molinero; and the Minister of Development of the Junta de Andalucía and president of Cetursa-Sierra Nevada, Marifran Carazo.
The board of directors of the Sports Press Association of Madrid (APDM) is made up of José Damián González, as president; Carmen Colino, Paco García Caridad and Gaspar Díez, as vice-presidents; Juan Gato, as treasurer; Gema Hassen-Bey, Paco Grande, Lydia Bermejo, Alejandro Alcázar, José Félix Díaz, Fernando Peinado and Sofía Martín, as members; and Juan Manuel Merino, as secretary. Luis Villarejo and Raúl Cancio are advisors to the president.
