The church of San José de Calasanz in Milan (Italy) hosted this Tuesday the funeral of the former Spanish soccer player and player Luis Suárez, who died on Sunday at the age of 88, who was fired by hundreds of relatives, friends, former teammates and ‘tifosi’ from Inter from Milan.
The coffin with the mortal remains of the former Galician player entered the church located in the Milan neighborhood of San Siro, near the Guiseppe Meazza stadium where he played so many afternoons. On top of the coffin, in addition to a large arrangement of flowers, he put on an Inter shirt with his name and the number ’10’.
The Coruña native, the only Spanish male soccer player to have won the Ballon d’Or and Euro 1964 champion with Spain, had lived in Milan since he hung up his boots. As a ‘Nerazzurro’ (1961-70), ‘Luisito’ Suárez won two consecutive European Cups (1964 and 1965), two Intercontinental Cups and three league titles, contributing as an ‘architect’ to the legend of Helenio Herrera’s ‘Grande Inter’.
Numerous personalities from the world of football came together to say their last goodbyes in the temple, such as the former president of Inter Massimo Moratti, who referred to him as the incarnation of “the beauty of football”.
Also present were representatives of FC Barcelona -the club he played for between 1954 and 1961 and where he won the Ballon d’Or- such as the sports vice president, Rafa Yuste, or the president of the Agrupació Barça Players (ABJ), Juan Manuel Asensi, or Real Madrid, such as the Director of Institutional Relations Emilio Butragueño.
