Mikey Williams signs with UCF after leaving Memphis

Former elite recruit Mikey Williams revealed on Friday that he committed to UCF, just a few days after saying he was leaving Memphis. Williams posted the news on Instagram with the words “All I required was a chance.”

Williams was apprehended last spring after an incident at his home on March 27 in which shots were reportedly fired at a car full of people who left the house. Williams had signed with Memphis in the 2023 class.

He was charged with nine felonies in the case, but in November he pleaded guilty to a lighter felonies charge of making illegal threats.

Williams entered a plea, which meant that the charge could be dropped to a misdemeanor when he meets a few conditions before his August sentence.

Williams never played an opponent for Memphis because he was in court and couldn’t be with the team. This week, UCF (10-4) shocked everyone by beating No. 3 Kansas. They will play BYU on Saturday and then go to Texas as well as Houston next week.

“Mikey Williams has chosen to go through the transfer the website,” Memphis said in a statement on Monday. “The University procedure to allow him to become part of the male basketball program had begun, but Williams chose to explore his options that this time.”

Williams is a 6-foot-2 guard in 3.6 million Instagram fans. He was a five-star talent early in high school, when his dunks and YouTube mixtapes made him famous across the country.

Mikey Williams, a former basketball player for Memphis, committed to UCF on Friday, he said on social media. The player from San Diego will now start over in the Sunshine State with UCF coach Johnny Dawkins.

Williams never played in an encounter for the Tigers. In November, he pleaded guilty to a gun charge, and if he follows the rules of his plea deal, six criminal counts could be dropped.

A Superior Court judge told Williams he had to go to trial the month before for charges that he fired a weapon into a car with five people inside last summer.

As part of his deal to cooperate with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, Williams agreed to go to counseling, learn how to safely handle guns, and do 80 hours of community service.

Williams will be one of the best students to ever come to UCF. This comes just a few days following the Knights beat No. 3 Kansas in one of the biggest victories in the school’s history.

UCF has never had a 5-star player sign to the team before. This is also the biggest-name star since Tacko Fall (2015–2019) and Michael Jordan’s son Marcus Jordan (2009–2012).

Williams scored 24.8 points and gave out 9.2 assists per game over San Ysidro (Calif.) last season. ESPN’s most recent list of the Top 100 players placed the powerful combo guard 34th.

The Tigers never got to see Williams play because he was charged with a crime related to a gunshot outside his home in San Diego County earlier that year.

On Monday, he used the NCAA move site, and on Friday, word spread that he had agreed to play among the Knights.

He was arrested because someone shot up his house on March 17. Police said in a news statement that shots were fired at a car leaving the house alongside five people inside just before midnight, following a fight. Police say bullets struck the car, yet no one inside was hurt.

Williams had to take a gun safety training, go to rage management classes, and do 80 hours for community service in exchange for the other eight counts being dropped.
