Miguel Méndez: “Part of my catechism is to collectivize the game”

MADRID, 23 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The women’s national basketball coach, Miguel Méndez, highlighted the high level of “competitiveness” reached by his team, some players that he tries to squeeze together as he has done in each of his teams, in search of a place in the Eurobasket final with the duel this Saturday against Hungary.

“We are reaching a point of high competitiveness. We have found a quintet, some rotations, which yesterday were different and tomorrow, we will see, but we have found a player base that allows us to play what we want to play. It is normal throughout of a championship, is to grow, that search for what works”, he said in statements provided by the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB).

The Galician coach also confessed to being “much calmer” after advancing to the semifinals and securing Spain’s ticket for the Pre-Olympic. “I am much calmer. It was something that made me very tense, the possibility of Spain missing championships, is the worst thing that can happen to Spanish basketball. We missed the World Cup and missing out on competing in February and competing in summer would have been very hard for this group of players who are entering the selection. That had us very worried. We have taken a weight off our shoulders”, he commented.

On the other hand, Méndez pointed out the importance of having all his players plugged in, in order to manage any obstacle, in terms of injuries, a bad day or a problematic rival. “Part of my catechism is to collectivize the game, in all my teams,” he said.

“In these types of matches there are players who can make a difference and what they have shown is that they are capable of attending to whoever is with a hot hand that day without selfishness. There is not that selfishness of wanting to be on the news the next day”, settled.
