BARCELONA, 20 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The coach of Girona, Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz ‘Míchel’ stressed that the Catalan club is “immortal and is getting back up”, after achieving this Sunday the long-awaited promotion to LaLiga Santander by beating Tenerife 1-3 in their third promotion final consecutive.
“Three people came to Girona and the rest of the ‘staff’ has grown a lot. The player was in the best hands and together we have achieved a promotion that they deserved two seasons ago. Girona is immortal, it gets back up and is in the First Division “, said Míchel in the press conference after the match.
On the game plan of the ‘gironins’, who were not worth the tie to go up, the coach imagined having his moment in a close final. “We had to look for the goal, the player gave his best performance at the most important moment,” explained Míchel, who thanked his counterpart at Tenerife, Luis Miguel Ramis, for the gesture at the end of the match.
“In these matches there are many emotions. Thank Ramis for the detail that he had as soon as the match ended. He said that we deserved it. The sportsmanship that has been shown is incredible,” said the Girona coach.
Asked about the key to Montilivi’s team, Míchel highlighted the resilience of his players. “They have managed to persist in hard work and with moments of great suffering in recent years. Quique (the sports director) is the great architect of all this, we all have to thank him for the fact that Girona is in the First Division today,” he added.
Finally, the coach admitted that he has not seen himself in the highest category until the referee has whistled for the end. “Football teaches you that you have to work until the last minute. We have worked all season and it was to convince ourselves of this, that it could be done. This year was ours and we were going to rise and make history,” he said.
