Medvedev suffers for the first time and fights with his coach

If on Friday the world number one, Novak Djokovic, had a terrible time to overcome Taylor Fritz in a game he won despite being injured, This Saturday, although without so much drama, the fourth, Daniil Medvedev, was not entirely comfortable either. For the first time so far in the Australian Open, the Russian suffered to solve his match against Filip Krajinovic, who threatened to go back a 0-2, although in the end he could not: 6-3, 6-3, 4-6, 3-6 and 6-0 in 3h: 06. Medvedev had to call for medical attention in the fourth set for a sore back of the right thigh. After the third he had had a good rally in French with his coach, Gilles Cervara, who got angry and left the track. Fortunately for him, these problems did not prevent him from solving the situation with a donut in the last heat. “It helped me to leave,” he said later about what had happened with the coach.

The Muscovite, who placed 52 winners, 14 of them in the last quarter, will face in eighth, round that he reaches in the tournament for the third time in a row and that is his top, American Mackenzie McDonald, who got rid of South African Lloyd Harris (7-6 (7), 6-1 and 6-4 in 2h: 01) without much difficulty.

Tsitsipas takes a break

After suffering in the second round to beat Australian Kokkinakis in five sets and four and a half hours, Stefanos Tsitsipas took a break from Mikael Ymer, the Swede who eliminated Carlos Alcaraz. The Greek only needed 1h: 34 to win by 6-4, 6-1 and 6-1 and return to the second round of the major Aussie, in which he was a semifinalist two years ago. Tsitsipas had 27 winners with eight aces and made few unforced errors (20). He will face Italian Matteo Berrettini on Monday, who won in three tie-breaks (7-6 (1), 7-6 (5) and 7-6 (5) Russian Karen Khachavov, in a very close match that lasted 2h: 59 and in which both players were exhausted. The Italian, who suffered abdominal discomfort, like Pedro Martínez, Carreño and Djokovic on Friday, had not passed the second round of the tournament and is already in the fourth.
