Medina Cantalejo: “We have to recover the essence of VAR”

MADRID, 13 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The new head of the Technical Referee Committee (CTA), Luis Medina Cantalejo, confessed this Monday in his presentation in office that the current generation of Spanish officials is “the best”, and acknowledged that the “essence” of the system must be recovered. video arbitration (VAR).

“We do self-criticism every week as a collective and I think we must recognize that we have to recover the essence of VAR after it has been a tool that has been eroded for some time. We must go back to the origins and not sanction any contact. VAR has improved the actions of the gaming jurisdiction, in which they are outside or within the area and has practically eradicated serious foul play, “said Medina Cantalejo, in an act accompanied by the president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales.

The person in charge of the CTA pointed out that “the problem” is “within the areas.” “We must ensure that the intervention of the VAR is only in manifestly clear actions. The VAR is a very useful tool, but we must give it a spin. The referees are here to give the best service to the teams,” he added.

“There will not be a break with the philosophy of VAR. The philosophy of VAR is that the field referee is the one who should take the reins and the VAR is a support. Talent is what differentiates the good referee from the great referee and the Talent is neither taught nor learned. The VAR is here to stay and we will try to do better, “he added about video refereeing.

“WE APPLY THE RULES, WE DO NOT LEGISLATE”

In addition, he insisted that the referees only apply the rules. “We do not legislate. All changes to the game rules are known before the start of the season and everything is scheduled. Personally, I think we must judge the consequences of what a hand means in the area,” he explained.

Thus, he was open to creating a specific VAR body in the future. “We must adhere to the protocol in question of the VAR. My relationship with the teams is very good and there will be no problem in making the pertinent clarifications in accordance with the norm,” said Medina Cantalejo.

“Five years ago it was unthinkable that we would have a normal conversation talking about arbitration. Little by little, actions related to the media have been implemented. We do not want to break this system, we want to have a good relationship with the media and we will do so. For ethics We cannot talk about specific plays and making the conversations public is something forbidden by the protocol established by international authorities, “he said.

In this way, Medina Cantalejo stated that the plays under review could be made public through screens. “In the competitions organized by the RFEF, such as the Spanish Super Cup, it is already being done,” he settled.

“The work that the whole team is doing is exceptional. We have the best generation of referees that I have ever known. All referees know how the actions they have had to face should be judged. The path must go towards normality, for football to flow at the risk that we could eat a penalty. We have to focus on very clear and obvious actions. I would have given anything to have the VAR during my time as an active referee, “he said.

“We must give a role to other acts of football so that they give us a different point of view. The contributions of many former players is very positive and no one is in a position of absolute truth,” valued the head of the CTA.

RUBIALES: “HE IS A REFERENCE AND A GREAT OF OUR FOOTBALL”

Finally, the president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, showed “all the support and affection for Luis Medina.” “We have known each other for many years and we have never stopped talking about football. He is a benchmark, a great one of our football respected by all. He is the son and grandson of a First Division referee and has left the flag even higher calling matches very important. In this new stage we continue to improve with full support and full autonomy for the arbitration team. Today there is a person whom I admire and respect, “he added.

“The feeling that we footballers had when Luis Medina refereed us was one of absolute respect. His charisma and professionalism was maximum. I think we have an excellent referee body. There is no country with a greater number of international referees. A great job is being done and as he says and, in keeping with the transparency policy that we have implemented in recent years, the influences on the arbitration will be zero, but we are open to all contributions that come in, “he concluded.
