Medina Cantalejo, new president of the Technical Committee of Referees

MADRID, 26 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The former Sevillian referee Luis Medina Cantalejo will be appointed next week as the new president of the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) to replace Carlos Velasco Carballo, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed.

“Luis Medina Cantalejo will be appointed as the new president of the Referees Technical Committee. Medina Cantalejo will leave his current position as president of the RFAF Referees Committee to join the RFEF,” the federative body announced, explaining that the appointment will be made official “throughout the next week.”

The one from Tomares (Seville) made his debut as a First Division referee in 1998 during a Real Sociedad-Real Oviedo, and participated in the 2006 World Cup in Germany as the only Spanish representative to replace Manuel Enrique Mejuto González.

After 155 games delivering justice in the highest category of Spanish football, he retired as a referee in the 2008-09 season, in which he directed the Copa del Rey final between FC Barcelona and Athletic Club and the UEFA Cup final between Shakhtar Donetsk and Werder Bremen, the last match of his refereeing career.

The President of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, has decided to undertake a “restructuring process” in some of its areas and departments, especially after the possible departure of Carlos Velasco Carballo to UEFA to lead the VAR.

In addition, the RFEF also announced that the journalist Pablo García Cuervo, current press officer of the absolute national team, will be appointed the new Communication Director of the RFEF.
