Mechaal leads a 1,500 category in the Spanish Championship

MADRID, 30 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish Athletics Championship entered its final fireworks this Sunday with a morning of great finals, like the one that Adel Mechaal signed up for in the 1,500m ahead of Mohamed Katir and Mario García Romo.

The track of the Ciutat de l’Esport de Torrent experienced an intense penultimate session, before the evening finale, with the ‘milqui’ as the great attraction. A world class race, which was electrifying and very exciting.

The favorites were placed after a fast start until Katir went on the attack with Mechaal and García Romo behind. The Murcian launched one more attack but the Catalan held on close to him, until Mechaal passed the finish line victorious.

The final stretch raised a Mechaal who achieved his fourth title with a time of 3:33.44, another two has in 5,000, a new record for the championships. Katir, who had just destroyed the European record of 5,000 meters held by Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, was silver (3:33.76).

García Romo had to defend himself against the final attack by Ignacio Fontes to climb to the third step with 3:34.77. For her part, the women’s 1,500 went to Esther Guerrero, from Girona, her fourth title, from less to more, with 4:18.71 and a beautiful duel between Águeda Marqués, who looked like she was going to be second, and Marta Pérez, who beat the Segovian in the last meter, silver with 4:19.91.

On the other hand, the 400 meters was also exciting with a tight victory in its final stretch between Óscar Husillos from Palencia and Iñaki Cañal from Asturias, a one-on-one in which the strongest was Husillos, for the sixth time, who took the gold with 45.36, only five hundredths less than Cañal.

The women’s 400 race was also attractive, with victory for Eva Santidrián who renewed the title and won brilliantly, stopping the clock at 52.67. The woman from Burgos lived a tough duel with Laura Bueno from Granada, who was beaten in bronze by Herminia Parra from La Mancha. A very high level final since the first eight were under 54 seconds.

On the other hand, Barcelona’s Jaime Guerra met the mark in the men’s length, with a personal best of 8.14. Combined expert Jorge Ureña was fourth but was injured in the last jump. In the women’s height, Una Stancev from Granada revalidated her title obtained last year in Nerja with 1.86 and, in the women’s javelin, Arantza Moreno from Biscay achieved her fifth title (55.86).
