The Royal Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC) announced this Monday that Margarita Victoria ‘Mavi’ García Cañellas and Mireia Benito Pellicer will be the cyclists proposed to participate in the road competitions of the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024, according to a statement.
The entity made this decision, which will have to be ratified by the Board of Olympic Federations, after the monitoring carried out during this season by the national coach, Gema Pascual, who has evaluated “all the cyclists candidates to occupy both places.” .
Spain finished 15th in the Olympic ranking by nation, which concluded on October 17, 2023, and will therefore have two runners in the online event and one in the time trial. Thus, Mireia Benito, Spanish champion for the last two years in the specialty against the clock, will be in charge of facing the CRI on July 27.
While in the online test, Benito will be paired with Mavi García, who has managed to get on the podium of the Giro d’Italia and finish in the ‘top 10’ in the three grand tours -Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a España- .
With this decision, the Spaniard will participate in her second Games, after finishing 12th in the online event and 23rd in the Tokyo 2020 time trial. Benito, for his part, will debut in this Olympic event in this summer’s edition in Paris.
The individual time trial of the Paris Olympic Games, which will be held on Saturday, July 27, will start from the Esplanade des Invalides, from where a practically flat 32.4 km route will begin.
The online test, which will take place on Sunday, August 4, will take place over a 158 km route, consisting of a large initial loop through the western part of the Paris region and which will involve climbing six elevations. After completing it, they will return to Paris to face three laps of the decisive final urban circuit, where they will have to overcome in each lap the climb to Montmartre, 1 km at 6.5% average slope.
