Matthäus proposes Rummenigge and Völler to chair German federation

Former German international Lothar Matthäus has proposed that Karl-heinz Rummenigge and Rudi Völler take the lead of the German Football Association (DFB), whose leadership is currently divided, which has led to a crisis.

“It is about time that the largest football federation in the world was led by someone who comes from football. That is the basis for my wish for Karl-Heinz Rummenigge or Rudi Völler to succeed (President Fritz) Keller,” he said. Matthäus in a comment for the Sky network.

“The ideal for me would be a solution with both, Rummenigge as president and Völler as vice president, “he added.

Matthäus recalls that both Rummenigge and Völler enjoy great prestige in the world of football and that both will soon leave their current positions at Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen.

Rummenigge is currently chairman of Bayern's board of directors, will be succeeded at the end of the years by Oliver Kahn, and Völler is CEO of Bayer Leverkusen.

Matthäus was partner of both in the German selection and of Rummenigge also in the Bayern Munich.

The former international maintains that Keller has his days counted as president but that his replacement is not enough but that the entire leadership has to be renewed.

“The entire leadership must be changed: the president, the vice president, the general secretary. All those who are part of the current system have to leave,” he said.

Keller is under pressure after he said during a meeting of the DFB leadership that Vice President Rainer Koch had a behavior worthy of Rolf Freisler, alluding to the Nazi judge for autonomy, responsible for death sentences to members of the resistance such as the brothers Hans and Sophie Scholl.

“The image our federation has given lately is shameful and has peaked with the Nazi comparison,” Matthäus said.
