The Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) has abandoned the Tour de France this Wednesday, in the middle of the eleventh stage dispute between Albertville and Col du Granon over 151.7 kilometers and after trying to escape.
Van der Poel, who shone in the last Giro d’Italia, hit the ground this Wednesday in a Tour de France where he had no legs or strength to try to win a stage and add it to the one he conquered last year in Mur de Bretagne.
Despite this, after the rest day, he tried to get into the breakaway of this high mountain stage together with his cyclocross rival Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma), but he faltered completely and chose to withdraw from the French round.
