Martínez beats Korda and Munar comes back against Thompson

Great start for Pedro Martínez at Roland Garros. The Spaniard, who reached the third round in 2020, qualified for the second round on Monday by beating Sebastian Korda in three sets (6-4, 6-2 and 6-2 in 2h: 15), precisely the rival that eliminated him in the same scenario last year. The American, perhaps, paid for the effort to win the title in Parma on Saturday, but that does not detract from the solid and forceful match that Martinez played, who will now have a beautiful, albeit difficult match against Stefanos Tsitsipas. “He is the favorite, there is nothing impossible here. I know him a lot from when we were little. I have to come out with clear ideas and knowing that I have nothing to lose, because he opts for more things here and I not so much,” he said about the Greek.

The Valencian played unleashed and knew how to protect his serve with 82% of points won with first. That way, he didn't concede a break in the whole game and Korda only had four options to score one. “This time the game was a little different, at that time I was a bit of a favorite, because he did not have the ranking or the titles that he has now. I did not play calm. It has not been revenge, you try to do your best. I knew he had just won a tournament and today was very hot, so I put it hard from the beginning and failed a little. “Now we can expect that Pedro, burdened by some physical problems so far this season, can continue the streak that started last year in Paris and continued in 2021 with his qualification for the third round in Australia.

Munar comeback

Another who had a good debut was the Rafa Nadal Academy pupil Jaume Munar. The Balearic claw shot to come back against the Australian Jordan Thompson, number 64 in the world whom he had never faced before, in a pulse that lasted until four hours and 23 minutes and was awarded by 6-7 (6), 6-1, 7-6 (5) and 6-4.

It was a game with many failures on the part of both sides (50 unforced errors made by Munar for 78 by Thompson, which thus overshadowed a notable number of winners, 78), but the Spaniard was able to take better advantage of his rival's to stand in the second round for the second time in four appearances in the main frame. His next appointment will be with the American gunner Reilly Opelka, who got rid of the Slovak Martin without problems (6-3, 6-2 and 6-4).
