Martín Fiz wins the Lisbon Half Marathon in M-60

MADRID, 12 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish athlete Martín Fiz, marathon world champion in 1995, won this Sunday the Lisbon Half Marathon in the M-60 category, completing his performance in the Portuguese capital with a time of 1:14:28, and successfully starts his attempt to win the five ‘Super Halfs’.

The man from Vitoria improved the forecasts that he himself had published on social networks, with a “conformist mark” of 1:17:20 and an “optimistic record” of 1:15:30, despite the adverse weather conditions. The heat and humidity have taken their toll on the participants, but they have not prevented Fiz from achieving victory, comfortably, ahead of the Portuguese Joao Caldeira and Manuel Casais.

In this way, the Basque achieves the first of the five steps to meet his new challenge: winning the most prestigious half marathon circuit in the world. The next appointments in 2023 will be in Copenhagen (September 17) and Cardiff (October 1), and he will try to finish off his feat in 2024 with the tests in Prague (April) and Valencia (October).

“Who was going to tell me! At 40 years old I said I was leaving athletics, at 50 I embarked on the adventure of the ‘Six Majors’ and managed to win all of them in my category and at 60 I started a new challenge, which consists of to win the ‘Super Halfs’. Today I won Lisbon with a good record and I’m already thinking about the next half of the circuit, which will be in Copenhagen. I’m very motivated and happy. I’ve had to work hard to recover from injuries that they had separated me from the competition, but the sacrifice was worth it,” Fiz said after the test.
