The Spanish tennis player Martín de la Puente qualified this Friday along with the Argentine Gustavo Fernández for the final of the doubles draw of the Wheelchair Tennis Masters, which is being played on clay at the Emilio Sánchez Academy located in El Prat de Llobregat (Barcelona).
De la Puente, who in singles is number 4 in the world ranking, won in the company of Fernández 2-6, 6-2 and 10-5 against the French Frédéric Cattaneo and Stéphane Houdet in the semifinals. Thus, the man from Vigo and his partner will play for the title with the British Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid.
This will repeat the Roland Garros final played this same year, where De la Puente and Fernández lost to Hewett and Reid by a tight 7-6(9) and 7-5. However, the Spanish-Argentine duo is the current Masters champion, after their victory last year in Oss (Netherlands).
The negative note this Friday for De la Puente in El Prat de Llobregat was his elimination from the individual draw, thanks to his 6-3 and 6-1 defeat precisely at the hands of Hewett. Now the Briton will face Fernández to become champion, after the Argentine beat the Japanese Tokito Oda 6-1, 2-6 and 7-5 in the other ‘semi’.
