Martín de la Puente and Dani Caverzaschi, heads and tails in their historic premiere at Roland Garros

MADRID, 31 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish wheelchair tennis experienced a historic day on Tuesday with the participation of Galician Martín de la Puente and Daniel Caverzaschi from Madrid in the Roland Garros tournament, with a different outcome for each.

De la Puente and Caverzaschi became the first Spaniards to play a ‘Grand Slam’ in their modality, but only the man from Vigo will have the opportunity for a second day in the individual draw, while his doubles partner fell by the wayside, although his debut was much more complicated.

The Galician player only needed 49 minutes to get rid of Frenchman Guilhem Laget, whom he authoritatively defeated by a double 6-0 in a game where he showed no signs of nerves and did not give up a single break point. A good debut to face his second duel of much more entity against the Argentine Gustavo Fernández, third seeded.

For his part, Dani Caverzaschi could not overcome the obstacle of the Dutchman Tom Egberink, world number eight and silver medalist at the Tokyo Games, an event in which he dropped the Madrid native out of the semifinals.

However, on this occasion, the Spanish tennis player put up much more resistance and took the match to three sets to lose 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 after two hours and 20 minutes. Caverzaschi knew how to replicate the ‘breaks’ of his rival in the third set, but ended up giving up his serve in a fatal way with 5-4 down.
