Mario García Romo breaks the Spanish mile record after 40 years

The Spanish athlete Mario García Romo broke the Spanish record for the mile this Saturday in a fast race held at the mythical track of The Armory in New York, within the Millrose Games.

The man from Salamanca, European bronze in 1,500 and fourth in the world last year outdoors, took advantage of his time in the traditional American indoor event to sign a 3:51.79 with which he broke José Manuel Abascal’s 1983 record.

García Romo, 23, took advantage of the fast race led by the American Yared Nuguse, who scored the Rudin Wanamaker Mile with the country’s record and close to the world record, the second mark in history (3:47.38).
