The Spanish Athletics Gala crowned Mariano García and Raquel González as the best athletes of 2022 this Saturday, in the Goyeneche auditorium at the headquarters of the Spanish Olympic Committee in Madrid.
‘La Moto’ García won the vote over Miguel Ángel López and Asier Martínez, the other two finalists for the best Spanish athlete of the year. In the balance of the Murcian middle-distance runner, his two golds in 800 meters weighed: in the World Cup on the indoor track in Belgrade and in the European outdoors in Munich.
In addition, Gabriel Lorente’s pupil broke the Spanish 800m indoor record (1:45.12). Miguel Ángel López and Asier Martínez were also proclaimed European champions in Munich, in the 35 km walk and 110 m hurdles, respectively.
Similarly, López broke the Spanish record twice (2:25:58) and was proclaimed world team champion. Martínez shone at the World Championships in Oregon, winning bronze in the 110 m hurdles and at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade, fourth in the 60 m hurdles.
For her part, Raquel González outvoted Maribel Pérez and Sara Gallego. The Catalan woman won the silver medal at the European Championships in Munich in the 35 km walk, becoming the fourth Spanish walker to reach a continental podium. In addition, she was fifth in the same distance in the World Cup, where she achieved the second best Spanish mark in history with 2: 42.27.
Sara Gallego finished fourth in the 400 hurdles at the European Championships, in a test in which she broke the Spanish record twice to leave it at 54.34, and Maribel Pérez broke the Spanish 60 m record five times (7.16) and achieved the second mark. Spanish in the history of 100 m (11.07), in addition to finishing sixth in the hectometre in the European.
