The Spanish-Romanian duo formed by María Xiao and Adina Diaconu stood on the podium this Friday in the first tournament of the year and one of the most important on the calendar, the WTT Star Contender Doha at the Lusail Sports Arena.
Xiao and Diaconu debuted with the first round victory over the Swedes Bergstrom and Kallberg by a resounding 3-0. In the quarterfinals they beat Zhu and Ng from Hong Kong 3-0 and in the semifinals, they faced Polcanov and Szocs, an Austrian-Romanian couple, who they won 3-1.
The Spanish-Romanian duo fell in the final against Qian and Chen, 0-3 and a very tight last set 9-11, thus obtaining the silver medal, but showing their good path to repeat the medal at the end of the year in the Championship of Europe.
In mixed doubles, Álvaro Robles and María Xiao did not advance from their first match, while Robles lost in singles in the second round against world number 7, Lin Yun-Ju of Chinese Taipei, 1-3. In the women's singles, María Xiao lost in her debut.
