María Herrera believes that the Women’s World Cup can help women reach the “elite”

The Toledo driver plans to compete in the new championship in 2024-25

The motorcycle racer María Herrera has commented, after the announcement by the International Motorcycle Federation (FIM) and Dorna Sports of the organization of the first Women’s Motorcycle World Championship, that it can “lay the foundations” for women “to have more options” to reach the “elite” in motorcycling.

“Throughout my career, I have faced great challenges due to a lack of support and sponsorship. Despite my achievements, it has not been easy to obtain the support necessary to advance my career. The path has been and continues to be tough, but I am determined to pave the way for future generations of female drivers. Therefore, I hope that the new Women’s Motorcycle World Championship will help change this situation and offer more opportunities for all women in this sport,” she said. the Spanish pilot.

María Herrera, one of the most prominent figures in the world of women’s motorcycling in Spain, plans to be one of the pilots on the starting grid of this new championship while waiting to consider various competitive opportunities for the 2024-25 season.

Herrera, the first woman to win a race in the Spanish Speed ​​Championship in 2013, is a reference in the world of motorcycling and an example of determination and success in a sport historically dominated by men.

This new competition aims to expand opportunities for female riders in elite motorcycling thanks to an environment in which they can build a viable professional career. A championship that will begin in 2024, will have 22 riders and will consist of six events, taking place together with the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship.

María Herrera has competed in the Mediterranean Speed ​​Championship, the Spanish Speed ​​Championship, and the World Motorcycle Championship in the Moto 3 class. At just 15 years old, she was crowned champion of the 2011 season of the Mediterranean Speed ​​Championship . In recent seasons, she has demonstrated her versatility by participating in the inaugural edition of the MotoE World Cup, as well as competing in the Supersport World Cup, where she won the national women’s title in 2020 and 2021, winning the Supersport category in the 24 hours of Catalonia 2022.
