Margaret Court: “I don’t think Serena Williams admired me”

BARCELONA, 5 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Australian former tennis player Margaret Court said that the American Serena Williams, who ended her career at the Open in her country this Friday at almost 41 years old, “never” has admired the maximum champion of ‘Grand Slam’ titles (24 ).

“I have admired Serena as a player. But I don’t think she has ever admired me,” said Margaret Court in an interview with the British newspaper ‘The Telegraph’, collected by Europa Press.

The youngest of the Williams, of five sisters from Compton (California), left the tracks after 27 years as a professional, with 23 ‘Grand Slam’ titles, finally one of the historical record of Margaret Court.

Precisely, the 80-year-old Australian acknowledged that she “would love” to have played at this time. “I think it’s much easier. How I would like to have taken my family or my friends with me. But I couldn’t, I had to go alone or with the national team,” she added.

“People don’t see all that. As fans, we had to play every week, because we had no money. Now, they can leave whenever they want and come back whenever they want,” said Court, who won his Grand Slam singles titles between 1960 and 1973.

Along these lines, the former tennis player stated that her first withdrawal in 1065 was because “she used to miss” her home. “We were gone 10 months. You can be with the odd person, but it’s not like having your family there. It’s a totally different world. That’s what disappoints me, that players today don’t honor the past of the game.” concluded.
