Marcelo returns to Fluminense

MADRID, 24 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The left-back Marcelo Vieira Da Silva has announced this Friday his signing for the Brazilian Fluminense, the club where he began his career and “where it all began”, as reported by the footballer and the Rio de Janeiro team on social networks.

“The boy who left Xerém to win the world is back home. Fluminense finalized the signing of Marcelo this Friday. The 34-year-old left-back, one of the best in history in his position, signed a contract until December 2024, with the option to renew until the end of 2025. The star will wear the number 12 shirt, which he has worn during his 15-year career at Real Madrid,” the club reported.

Thus, the Rio de Janeiro side returns to the club where he played from 2005 to 2007, until he signed for Real Madrid. As a Real Madrid player, Marcelo lifted the Champions League five times, four Club World Cups and six Leagues, three European Super Cups, two Copas del Rey and five Spanish Super Cups.

After 15 years in the white team, Marcelo signed for the Greek Olympiacos this season in September 2022, where he completed 10 games in which he scored 3 goals. However, he had been without a team since mid-February.

“Back to the place where it all started”, the player wrote on social networks. “It is difficult to express what this moment means to me. It has been many years dreaming of returning to my origins, to the team that trained me and taught me what I know about football,” Marcelo said in statements published by Fluminense.

The player will arrive in Rio de Janeiro to join the squad led by the coach, Fernando Diniz, in about two weeks, after completing the procedures for his signing, as announced by the entity. “The left back will be signed up by the club to play in the Copa Libertadores da América,” he informed.

With Fluminense, Marcelo defended the tricolor armor in 40 games and scored 6 goals; he won the Carioca Championship and the Rio Cup in 2005. In addition, he played 58 games with the ‘Canarinha’, in which he scored six goals and won the 2013 Confederations Cup and the silver and bronze medals at the 2012 London Olympics and Beijing 2008, respectively.
