Manuel Vizcaíno, president of Cádiz, after speaking in the first part of the interview about the First Division project, now in this second chapter, he talks about the current Cádiz squad, saturated with 39 professionals; the coach, Álvaro Cervera, renewed for the next four seasons; and the transfer market. He also shows his opinion about the controversial name change of the Ramón de Carranza stadium.
You argue that firing a coach is the biggest failure for a president. Now, with the team in First Division, he signs Álvaro Cervera for the next four seasonss.
They are ways of running a club. Normally, when a results crisis comes, the coach is usually dispensed with, but we think that the coach's job is not an independent job, but that the club also has to be up to the task and many times we have to analyze why not you get to be where you want. After the Extremadura game, everyone was thinking about the dismissal of Álvaro Cervera, starting with him, but we understood that nothing had changed so that he was replaced. He was not winning from time to time, but the team continued to know what it was doing and at that moment we thought that perhaps we were the ones who had to change and reinforce and strengthen the coach's thinking. We did well.
What has Álvaro Cervera given Cádiz?
Álvaro has given Cádiz a lot and vice versa. He recognizes it. Álvaro has given him stability in that he is clear about what had to be done to achieve the goal and the club has reinforced that idea by going hand in hand until it has been achieved.
Does Álvaro Cervera have a clause?
It has a 30 million clause, but when a coach wants to leave, he leaves and he has always been clear that he wanted to stay and we have always also been clear that we wanted him to stay. They have been conversations that have lasted in time because the moment had to come when everything was adjusted as we wanted and it has been.
Overbooking in the squad, 39 players and many to go.
The squad has to be cut because many loaners have come, compulsory purchases have been executed and there will be players who are loaned again, others rescinded and others sold. These are the three possible ways out and we are working on it. The departures will define the incorporations.
How many offers have you rejected for Álex Fernández?
I'm not going to auction Álex (Fernández). It is not for sale, but that does not mean it will not be sold. The price of Álex Fernández is his buyout clause (it's 20 million euros). I don't want to sell it. He is a player who has participated in 40% of Cádiz goals. If an offer comes that we understand is out of the market and the footballer accepts it, it would be seen, but it is not for sale regardless of the fact that our theory is to sell to grow.
Could Manu Vallejo come back?
There are options, but I understand that Manu Vallejo is a typical player for the squad of this new Valencia that is being formed. He is a young, hungry, international player and the coach is sure to love him for sure. From there, we don't know. We have the Vallejo position perfectly covered with Jurado, Perea and Panadero. With changes, for someone to enter they will have to leave, and I do not change my players for any.
Is it true that Cádiz wants Aketxe?
There were conversations. Ager (Aketxe) is part of our family, he is one of us. Due to circumstances, he did not compete with us last season. He is a boy who has grown up a lot with us, but we did not agree.
It is the last season of Cifuentes' contract, do you see him longer?
Dreams come true. We both had the dream of seeing Alberto play in Primera and we are going to see him. He will be as long as he wants to be. We are talking about a goalkeeper who, until this season, has been the undisputed starter at Cádiz. Nobody has given Cifuentes anything. It will depend more on him. The footballers retire due to circumstances. Alberto is a leader, captain and fundamental base of what has been achieved.
What do you think of the name change of the Ramón de Carranza stadium?
The law must be complied with, so there is no discussion, but the law can be complied with in many ways, and I believe that the Carranza brand, associated as the surname of a stadium, is very powerful and it would be a shame to lose it. We have not wanted to be in the commission because we understand that this is something that the cadistas have to decide and the stadium is municipal, so the City Council uses its reasons and I respect them and we remain on the sidelines.
Is the club working towards the subscriber campaign?
Soon we will announce a solution that we have found. It is creative and interesting for everyone.
Can football last a full season without fans?
Soccer can last a full season without an audience. I have said that football without fans was not football, but now it will be another football. Either we adapt or we close the world, not football, because it is not pleasant for me to go to a bar with a mask, but either we do it or we close all the bars.
How did you convince Fali to overcome her fear of the coronavirus and go back to racing?
He was convinced, the only thing I did was understand him, but as a club. For me he was an injured player and that's how I treated him. I put the example of Jesús Navas 15 years ago at Sevilla, who had a psychological problem and we treated him like an injured player. Instead of taking drastic measures against him, because he was not in the preseason, we decided to put him in the bag understanding it. We did the same with Fali. I remember Navas saying that if he had to do preseason to play for Sevilla he would retire. There are players who have knee problems and others, occasionally, psychological. To this day I think that neither Sevilla nor Cádiz have been wrong with Navas and Fali.
Cádiz is determined to keep the Carranza Trophy alive.
It is an endeavor because after 66 editions it cannot be lost. I have known the Trophy as something great and we have revitalized it. We tried to be creative so that it would never get lost. Miguel Ángel Gil has shown his affection for Cádiz and made himself available. Cádiz – Atlético de Madrid is the opportunity that has arisen for us. It seems that it could be about the 15th, to see if everything works out. Next year either we go back to women's football or we see.
