Madrid and Barça, only in the final of the Super Cup

This Thursday the Federation (RFEF) will hold the Super Cup draw, which will pit Madrid and Barcelona against Athletic and Real Sociedad. The Federation's tournament regulation establishes that the League champion (Real Madrid) must face the Cup runner-up, and that the Cup Champion must do so with the League runner-up (Barça). But as the final of the Copa del Rey has not yet been disputed due to the incidence of the pandemic and the desire of the two Basque finalists, Athletic and Real Sociedad, if they play that meeting with the public, they have to resort to the draw to tie them up with Madrid and Barcelona.

The semifinals of the Spanish Super Cup will be held on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 January, and the final on Sunday 17 also next month. The three matches will be in Andalusia. The semis quite possibly in Malaga and Córdoba, and the final at the La Cartuja stadium, in Seville. This was agreed on last day 1 by the president of the RFEF, Luis Rubiales, and the Secretary General of Sports of the Junta de Andalucía, José María Arrabal (Citizens).

The RFEF signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia to hold three editions of the Super Cup in that Middle Eastern country. The first was held last January, but now the Arabs have asked for the contract to be postponed due to the incidence of COVID in our country. The document signed by the RFEF with Saudi Arabia represents an income of 120 million euros, half of them to be distributed among the participating clubs, but not in the same proportion. A confidentiality agreement between the parties prevents the disclosure of the exact figures that the clubs and the Federation will enter and the specific distribution of the amounts. This caused problems already in the tournament played last winter in Arabia.

Valencia, who played that first edition, filed a complaint with the ordinary Justice for the distribution of money established by the Royal Spanish Football Federation for participating in the Spanish Super Cup. The complaint questions the asymmetric distribution of money between the four participants in the tournament that was played at the beginning of January and for which Valencia received less income than the three remaining contenders, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. The income arc for the clubs ranged between 2.5 and 6.8 million euros.

The Federation has convened an Assembly for this Thursday in which Rubiales will explain what the change of headquarters implies and in which it will give details of the tournament. Today's event will also raffle the Women's Super Cup. Barcelona, as champion of the First Iberdrola, Atlético de Madrid, runner-up, Levante, third classified last year, and EDF Logroño, finalist of the Queen's Cup, will be the teams that enter the pure draw.
