The Spanish Lucas Eguibar has prevailed this Saturday in the first of the two tests of the Snowboardcross (SBX) World Cup that are held in the Andalusian resort of Sierra Nevada, a result that puts him squarely in the fight for the Globe de Cristal after rising to fourth place in the ranking of the specialty.
In the final this Saturday, the man from San Sebastian (NKEF-DALTON) placed first against rivals such as the Italians Omar Visintin and Lorenzo Sommariva or the Frenchman Loan Bozzolo -winner of the Cervinia World Cup-; with a tremendously fast and solid descent he reached the finish line first.
“I felt very comfortable on the track, I had extra motivation to get the bone out of the Bakuriani World Championship (Georgia) and I tried to give it my all. I was totally focused on this Saturday’s race and Sunday’s race will be another story “, indicated Eguibar after proclaiming himself the winner.
Eguibar, who in qualifying beat Canadian Tristan Bell and also Basque Álvaro Romero (NKEF-DALTON) in his series, advanced as first in the round of 16 after beating Australian Cameron Bolton at the finish line, and in the quarterfinals he also managed to lead the proof. Subsequently, he signed his pass to the final by only being behind the Italian Omar Visintin in the semifinals.
Thanks to his victory, Eguibar is placed in fourth position, with 232 points, in the fight for the Crystal Globe, a race led by the German Martin Noerl (274 points); second is the Italian Omar Visintin (250 points), while the Frenchman Loan Bozzolo (245 points) closes the provisional podium.
Now, there are four tests left in the SBX World Cup, the first of which is in Sierra Nevada this Sunday. After the Andalusian event will come the one in Veysonnaz (Switzerland) on March 16 and the one in Mt.St.Anne (Canada), with a double date on March 25 and 26.
“We have four races left and we have to push a lot. Today I have given a good pinch and I have moved up a few places. I am going to be very aggressive because I am very good at this Sierra Nevada circuit and we are going with everything in the ones we have left. The Crystal Globe is the goal and this year I’m doing well. Two fourth places and now this victory that puts us in a good position to achieve it,” he said.
On Sunday they will have the option of winning again in the second round of the Sierra Nevada World Cup, in which the other members of the Movistar SBX Team will also seek the finals: Álvaro Romero, Bernat Ribera and Toni Toledo.
