Löw does not rule out calling the world champions excluded

Joachim Löw, Germany coach, appeared before the press this Monday, for the first time since the defeat against Spain (6-0), and defended the renewal process that he has launched in the national team for the next European Championship . Despite the renewal undertaken, Löw does not rule out calling one or more of the world champions in 2014 already excluded from the selection “if it is for the good of the team”. Among those who were excluded, Thomas Müller, Jérôme Boateng or Mats Hummels.

Löw began his speech with criticism of some media for reproaching him that, since the defeat against Spain, he had not appeared before journalists.

“Anyone who knows me knows that I am always open to constructive criticism and that I always stand up. That is why I was surprised to read things like 'Löw has disappeared,'” he said.

“After the game against Spain I went to the press conference normally, then a process followed that we had all agreed to. We were all deeply disappointed, but we immediately started to analyze that game intensively,” added the Germany coach.

Löw stressed that the time to appear again before the press was after his meeting with the top leadership of the German Football Federation (DFB), which took place last Monday because it was not possible to bring all the members together before.

“Through the years we have had difficult situations and you learn to handle them. Naturally after that 6-0 we were disappointed and angry. However, we are convinced of the process we have undertaken. We knew that there were going to be setbacks, but confidence in the players is intact, “he noted.

Löw recalled that after 2018, after a double failure at the World Cup in Russia and the Nations League, he decided to undertake a renewal process that involves giving young players time to evolve.

During this year, Löw said, the team received little training because priority was given to protecting the health of the players amid an atypical situation and calendar due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“This year we have only had one tactical training, last year there were nine. The priority this year was the health of the players. We need players in shape next year,” he stressed. “When a young team like ours has almost no training sessions it is difficult to ask them to do what is planned,” he added.

Löw has a contract with the DFB until 2022, but this Monday he declared that it is normal for a balance to be made after the European Championship.
