Loreen, queen of Eurovision and the new Johnny Logan: the only two people in history to have won the festival twice

Europe already has a queen: Loreen. The Swedish singer won this Saturday Eurovision 2023 with the song ‘Tattoo’, a triumph that allows him to register two milestones in the history of the festival. On the one hand, he awards the seventh victory to his country, which now equals Ireland in the ranking; on the other, Loreen gets her second trophy in this contest, something that only one person had achieved before.

Until now, the only singer who had won Eurovision on more than one occasion was Johnny Logan. The Irish performer, of Australian origin, was victorious in 1980 with the song ‘What’s Another Year?’, but it wasn’t the only one. Seven years later, in 1987, he returned to represent his country with ‘Hold Me Now’ and won again, something that had never happened and would never happen again… until now. Of course, Johnny Logan succeeded again later in the festival, but only as a composer (1992).

Throughout the history of Eurovision there have been many singers who have participated on more than one occasion in this contest, including winners of the festival who have repeated in search of a second triumph, such as the Israeli Dana International or the Swedish Carola or Charlotte Perrelli. . But really no one had managed to take two crystal microphones to their country since Logan’s feat and, now, too. Loreen, who managed to defeat Finland, Second classified. Spain, for its part, was left in a disappointing seventeenth position.

Loreen, second victory in Eurovision after triumphing in 2012 with ‘Euphoria’

Loreen triumphed in 2012 with the song ‘Euphoria’, when she became the most supported festival winner in history behind Alexander Rybak (Norway, 2009). ‘Euphoria’ smashed records on music charts around the world and Loreen became a music star, as well as an idol in the social sphere who has always been an example of activism in favor of human rights, against racism and in support of the LGTBI+ community.

Before winning on her first visit to Eurovision, Loreen had tried to attend the festival a year earlier, in 2011, with the song ‘My Heart Is Refusing Me’, but it was not selected by her country. Neither did she manage to return to the festival when she tried, again, in 2017 with the song ‘Statements’. However, she did manage to win the Swedish pre-selection that gives the passport for Eurovision -the Melodifestivalen it’s like our Benidorm Fest– this year, when he came with ‘Tattoo’, the song that finally triumphed at Eurovision.
