Lluís López resigns after 16 years at Espanyol

Lluís López arrived at Espanyol at the age of eight. He was a child from Gimnàstic Manresa who, season after season, became an indispensable part of the different youth teams, a promise that promised a future in the first team. At just 16 years old, he attended a preseason with the first team. Eight years after that and 16 after his arrival, the player says goodbye to Espanyol.

After five years in the subsidiary, in which he became captain, and failing to make the leap, it was in the 2018-19 campaign with Joan Francesc Ferrer, Rubi, when he was given the first opportunity. The footballer barely played ten games that year, but managed to make his debut in the First Division and help Espanyol qualify for European competitions. His moment came a year later, with David Gallego, who knew him from the subsidiary, on the bench.

The one from Manresa started as the starter, but the bad results and the team's poor defensive performance wasted Gallego and also Lluís. He participated in 15 games including the Europa League, the Copa del Rey and the League but in January he had to go to Tenerife to have minutes. Neither Pablo Machín nor Abelardo Fernández trusted him. On the island Lluís participated in nine meetings.

Last season at LaLiga SmartBank the youth squad showed solvency and that the category was perfectly suited to his characteristics. He played 19 games and was solid, but this season, in the First Division and with the stiff competition, the tables had turned. Leandro Cabrera, Fernando Calero, Sergi Gómez and David López. Too many roosters for a Lluís who finished his contract next June and who, in accordance with the sports management, has decided to separate from Espanyol. His destination is Zaragoza.
