LIV Golf announces 2023 launch of 48-player, 12-team league

MADRID, 27 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

LIV Golf, promoter of the new circuit in the world of golf that has caused a schism and the rejection of the European and American circuits, announced on Wednesday the launch next year of a league in which 48 players divided into 12 teams will compete.

“Based on the successful start of the LIV Golf Invitational Series and the incredible feedback received from players and fans, LIV Golf announces that the LVI Golf League will officially launch in 2023 with 48 players and 12 established team franchises competing in one tournament. of 14 tests,” LVI Golf said in a statement.

The circuit noted that the full list of events will be announced at a later date and hopes that it will expand its “global presence in North and Latin America, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Europe”, and that it will “continue to improve the roads of the players” through its International Series, with which it continues to hope to bring “the best players in the world to places like Thailand, England, Korea, Vietnam, the Middle East, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and new places in America and Europe”.

In total, LIV Golf confirmed that it will offer 25 tournaments around the world in 2023 that “will add value, innovation and new audiences” to this sport, right now divided among those who choose to play in these series, which has cost them its conditions of membership of the DP World Tour and the PGA.

The new league will be developed under “a new and innovative format” in which there will be simultaneous individual and team matches, and each season will culminate with a grand final in match play format as a World Team Championship. In addition, its calendar “will not compete” with the four majors or with international team events such as the Ryder Cup, “so the best players will always be able to make their own decisions about where to play.”

As for the format, each team will be led by an established captain, who will compete and “have the ability to build their franchises as they see fit.” Promotion and relegation will also be established through the International Series, “annually providing new opportunities for international golfers and the next generation.”

“Our franchise model will bring new energy and excitement to fans in every corner of the world, establishing a league of teams to connect and grow. The International Series will attract new talent and offer unprecedented pathways that will develop the next generation of stars.” , noted LIV Golf CEO and Commissioner Greg Norman.

The Australian assured that LIV Golf “is committed to making sustainable investments that grow the game now and in the future.” “We are proud to turn these dreams into reality,” he added.
