Lili Fernández and Paula Soria complete the Spanish plenary session on the first day of the beach volleyball World Cup

MADRID, 7 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Alicante players Liliana Fernández and Paula Soria, beating the Polish Jagoda Gruszczynska and Aleksandra Wachowicz 27-25, 15-21 and 15-10, completed this Saturday the total number of Spanish victories on the first day of competition of the absolute World Championship of beach volleyball, which is being held in the Mexican state of Tlaxcala.

During a hard-fought match at the Apizaco headquarters, corresponding to Group E, Fernández and Soria alternated with their rivals in control of the scoreboard and experienced a tight outcome of the first set. He smiled at the Spanish side, after saving three set points against him.

The Poles confirmed their improvement in the next set, controlling it at all times and taking the match to a tie-break. Although Gruszczynska and Wachowicz started that tiebreaker well, the Spanish reaction to seal the victory was based on the attacks of the two-time Olympian.

Meanwhile, within Group I, the Spanish debutants Tania Moreno and Daniela Álvarez won 28-26 and 21-15 against the Americans Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft, thanks to a match that was played at the Huamantla venue.

The first set was a give and take, with alternations in dominance. Álvarez’s blocking work and Moreno’s punch were decisive in winning it by the slightest difference. With their nerves shaken, the current continental runners-up increased the intensity of their actions, until they tied the second set and thus secured the victory.

Finally, the experienced Spaniards Pablo Herrera and Adrián Gavira repeated the script of their compatriots against the Australians Chris McHugh and Paul Burnett (22-20 and 21-13), in their case within Group H and at the Tlaxcala headquarters of Xicohténcatl.

A tight first set and a clearer second gave the victory to the Castellón and the San Roque natives, in the eleventh World Championship for Herrera. He and Gavira made their mark in the outcome of the first set, where they gained the upper hand, and continued their pressure on the Oceanic team so that they made numerous errors in the second set.
