Lewandowski is The Best ahead of Cristiano and Messi

Neither Messi nor Cristiano nor Madrid nor Barça nor Premier nor LaLiga. The great winner of 2020 is Polish, he plays for Bayern and his name is Robert Lewandowski. The forward extended the overwhelming dominance of his team with the conquest of The Best, the last proof – if it was necessary – that the Bavarians swept through this very different and tough year, the year of the coronavirus pandemic.

The collective awards obtained by Bayern are also joined by the individual players of their players. In that section, Lewandowski was the most indicated to take them. The 32-year-old player was the great scorer of a team that won all the titles at stake: Bundesliga, German Cup, German Super Cup, European Super Cup and Champions. In the two most important, in addition, the Champions League and the Bundesliga, he was the top scorer.

In the absence of the Ballon d'Or, suspended this year by France Football, the current edition of The Best acquired a special dimension. In addition, it is considered the most “democratic” award of all, since almost all the players in the world of football participate. Thus, captains, coaches, fans and journalists from 200 media share the vote.

Hardened scorer

Lewandowski's triumph had been brewing for years. At Dortmund he made it clear that he was a striker to conquer Europe and Bayern quickly realized that they stole him from their great German rival. With the red Bayern shirt, he improved every year until he finished an unbeatable 2020. No one can dispute that with his goals he made the Bavarians even more powerful than they already are.

The late arrival of the Pole also implies displacing Messi and Cristiano, something unthinkable until not long ago. In 2018, the year of the World Cup, Modric already managed to unseat them from the top of The Best. Now it is Lewandowski who is crowned the new king, something very commendable because in three of the four editions granted so far, either Cristiano (2) or Messi (1) had emerged victorious. The Argentine, in fact, defended the crown.

The Puskas, for Son

Tottenham's South Korean Heung-Min Son took home the Puskas award for the best goal of the year. The Premier striker obtained that recognition after his goal against West Ham by leaving all his rivals from outside the area. Behind him were Luis Suárez, for a high heel goal with Barça, and the Uruguayan De Arrascaeta, from Flamengo.
