Lewandowski: “I would have continued at Bayern out of obligation, not out of joy”

MADRID, 5 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

FC Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski acknowledged this Wednesday that if he had not left Bayern Munich this summer, he would have continued at the Bavarian club “out of obligation” and “not out of joy”, at the same time that he confessed that he lived his “best time ” in Germany during Hansi Flick’s time as coach of the Teutonic team.

“While Hansi (Flick) was coach in Munich, I lived my best time at Bayern. We won everything, I was able to fulfill my dream of winning the Champions League. It was a super period,” said the 34-year-old forward in an interview published this Wednesday in the newspaper Sport Bild.

Lewandowski signed for FC Barcelona in the summer of 2022 after eight years at the Bavarian club, and acknowledged that Flick’s successor on the Munich bench, Julian Nagelsmann, was not an argument to decide his goodbye. Furthermore, he revealed that if he had stayed in Munich, he would have lost the “joy” of being a footballer.

“Of course I would have continued going to work, but more out of obligation, not out of joy. I didn’t want that feeling, it wouldn’t have been good for the club or for me,” he said.

On Thomas Tuchel and given the “surprise” that Nagelsmann’s dismissal caused him, Lewandowski defended the arrival on the Bayern bench of a “super coach” with “his own stamp”. “Tuchel can bring Bayern many titles, both this season and in the future. As long as the team continues to develop, there will be no reason for criticism,” he explained.

Likewise, he valued the departure of Flick from Bayern. “With him everything was great, we showed great performance and won titles, and he also left at the end. From my point of view, it was a bit strange, difficult to understand. But that’s the business, I’m just part of it.” , lament.

The striker also wanted to praise Jurgen Klopp, his coach when he was a Borussia Dortmund player and “adoptive father” since he had a conversation with him in September 2011, after losing a Champions League match against Olympique de Marseille. “I felt as if a father figure was sitting in front of me,” he recalled, before confessing that it was also the coach who prevented his departure to Manchester United at just 22 years old.

“I spoke with Aki (Hans-Joachim) Watzke and Jürgen Klopp in the training camp. I wanted to go to Manchester United. But they told me: ‘No way, Robert. We need you. You have to stay'”, he concluded.
