Letizia shows her concern about the “obesity epidemic”: fatphobes and pesocentrics

Doña Letizia has inaugurated in Zagreb (Croatia) the summit on the prevention of childhood obesity. As FAO’s Ambassador for Nutrition she has delivered a very elaborate speech. With very clear and direct language, the Queen has shown her concern about “the obesity epidemic and childhood overweight.” In this act she has been accompanied by the Croatian first lady, the doctor and professor Music; and by the WHO, represented by the executive director for Europe, Robb Butler. Dr. Sanja Music Milanovic is an expert in this field. The event took place this Wednesday, May 10, at the Westin Hotel in the Croatian capital.

It has been a very descriptive, concise and clear speech. The Queen has pointed to obesity in childhood with a multifactorial consequence. Among other causes, she has focused on “the abundance of ultra-processed in the environment, the wide commercialization and easy access to unhealthy foodthe low quality of school meals, the few options to practice physical activity, and the low knowledge of basic health concepts”. He has also mentioned that “there are sectors of society that have denounced what they consider to be fatphobic and pesocentric approaches.” And he added: “When a boy or a girl (it is about one in three children) suffers from this disease, everyone around them (family, school, health system, community) must help, protect and activate the solution, because their health is at stake, also his mental health”. He has concluded by making a call to “awareness” of public opinion through “forceful campaigns similar to those of smoking.”
