The image of the queen in the stands of the Philippe-Chatrier track, where she has seen Carlos Alcaraz The fact that she made it to the semi-finals in a tough match against the American Tommy Paul has been quite a surprise. Not because we weren’t expecting it (which we were) or because of the casual look she’s sporting these days at the Olympic Games (jeans and a Spanish polo shirt) but because of a striking accessory that royal protocol doesn’t allow her to wear in her daily life: sunglasses.
And at more than 35º below the scorching sun of August 1, there is no protocol that is worth it. The queen has protected herself from the rays with a red fan, which she placed as a screen over her face, and some very modern sunglasses. It is the first time she has worn them in an ‘act of service’ and she has done so, as always, with an innate naturalness and elegance.
The model, which perfectly suited her features, has a black frame, mirrored lenses and a round shape, designed by one of her favourite designers: Carolina Herrera. Now, in addition, they are reduced by 60% and are suitable for all budgets: 67.60 euros.
Sunglasses are not banned per se, but it is rude to greet another person wearing them, as they prevent direct eye contact. It is also not well-regarded to wear them indoors, so they end up being an annoying accessory. Thus, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, like other European royals, limit them as much as possible, ruling them out at institutional events.
