Six months have passed since Leonor entered the Zaragoza Military Academy to begin his military training. His colleagues highlight his humility and his superiors highlight his excellence as a student. Everyone delighted. So much so that Zarzuela, together with the Ministry of Defense, would be studying the possibility of sending the princess of Asturias on a foreign mission to put the finishing touch to his time in the Army.
It will be in 2026 when the heir to the Throne completes her military training on Land, Air and Sea after passing through the Academies of Zaragoza, San Javier and the Marín Naval School. Three specialties in three academic years that have been adapted especially for her and that could end with the greatest challenge of all: a mission abroad. “You have to look at the options that exist and carefully study everything related to the issue of security”Zarzuela sources assure Confidential Monarchy. “She would continue to be another member of the Army, as she has been until now as a student.” They also add that it is the wish of the King Felipe VI that his daughter “achieves greater military knowledge and skills from which he himself benefited.”
Among the options being considered is the international mission that the Spanish Army carries out in Lebanon, which operates under the flag of the United Nations. It is one of the oldest and one of the safest for the Armed Forces, which on more than one occasion have had command of that deployment. Leonor would be sent as a UN Blue Helmet to the Miguel de Cervantes base, in Marjayún, where the mission’s Eastern Sector Headquarters is located. It is a large base, well protected and respected by both Israel and the Hezbollah militias, participants in the armed conflict.
Another possibility would be to integrate the Princess of Asturias on a Navy ship. Currently, Spain participates in the permanent NATO naval groups that monitor the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, as well as in the Atalanta mission, in the waters of Somalia, to combat piracy, the latter under the flag of the European Union. A challenge that is not too far from the one she will carry out with the Juan Sebastián Elcano, the training ship on which her father also trained and on which she will cross the Atlantic in 2026, during her last military stage.
The Borbón cadet lady is already counting the days until her next military challenge. Next Monday, March 11, the princess and her companions will be deployed to the San Gregorio Maneuver Field, where they will remain for two weeks. Students will practice maneuvers with explosives and live firewith the assault rifle, topographic measurements and combat track.
During these days, they will eat from cans and field kitchens. “Leonor is demonstrating her skill and ability. She was born for it and has very internalized values of loyalty and sacrifice. She knows very well what her duty will be in the future,” she says.
