Lara Arruabarrena: four donuts to return to a main draw seven months later

Lara Arruabarrena (San Sebastián, 29 years old) put an end this Sunday to an ordeal of poor results that had prevented her from playing in the main draw of a WTA tournament for just over seven months, when she was eliminated in the third round of the Prague Open 125, at the hands of the Belgian Maryna Zanevska. At that time it was the 150th in the world, a ranking that made it very difficult for him to enter the tournaments directly without going through the previous one. Now it is the 167th and in the Colsanitas Cup in Bogotá he managed to pass the cut in a forceful way. He won both qualifying matches without giving up a single game, with four donuts against the Canadian Zhao (426th) and the Colombian Monroy (1,148th).

Since that Czech tournament, Arruabarrena fell in the first round of the Roland Garros and Australian Open qualifiers. Nor could he advance in ITF tournaments or a few weeks ago in the Mexican tour that passed through Guadalajara and Monterrey., where she achieved her only victory in all this time, against the Italian Cocciaretto (111th). Perhaps that was the first sign of the improvement that has led him to finally be able to contest a WTA 250 in a place that he is good at, because there, in Bogotá, won in 2012 one of the two titles he treasures in his career (the other is Seoul in 2016), and then he played the finals of 2017 and 2018.

Tournament with Spanish color

Lara will face this Tuesday (around 20:00) in the first round against another Colombian, Jessica Plazas (894th), in a tournament with a large presence of the Navy, since the second favorite of the Cup, Sara Sorribes (will make her debut on Tuesday at 17:00 against the Italian Sara Errani), who will face, if she wins, Aliona Bolsava, another Navy tennis player who could beat the 2018 winner, the Slovak Schmiedlova (6-4, 3-6 and 6-1). It is the second victory of 2021 for the Catalan of Moldovan origin. Nuria Parrizas, who accesses the main draw of a 250 for the first time, beat her compatriot Cristina Bucsa, which also debuted in the category, 6-3 and 6-2. It will be measured against the Romanian Bara or the Dutch Rus.

Results, table and calendar.
