The Australian Nick Kyrgios took this Monday one of the most morbid matches of the day in the Masters 1,000 of Indian Wells after defeating the eighth seed of the tournament, the Norwegian Casper Ruud by a double 6-4.
Kyrgios, who is playing the final phase of the tournament after receiving an invitation, has not forgotten the rivalry he has had with Ruud since the match they both played at the Masters 1,000 in Rome, where Kyrgios was disqualified for throwing a chair in the middle of the track, an action for which Ruud called him an “idiot”. A crossover of statements in which Kyrgios also accused Ruud of “stealing points” in clay court tournaments.
For this reason, Kyrgios, who did respectfully greet Ruud at the net at the end of the game, was exultant before the camera that recorded him on the bench shortly after and took the opportunity to throw a new dart at the Norwegian: “I can’t hear you talking now. Nobody, you’re a fucking nobody.”
However, at a press conference he was somewhat more restrained and even praised him. “It was a great victory. Ruud is a great player, the last two years he has played fantastic tennis, but today I played with a correct style. I am very happy right now with my team, He gives me a lot of support and that has helped me play big points today.”
Kyrgios, who seems to be recovering sensations after two seasons in which he has hardly played due to the pandemic, will now look for a place in the quarterfinals against another demanding rival: the Italian Jannik Sinner. Kyrgios is back with his best tennis…and his quirks.
