Kyrgios: “If I had won the ‘Grand Slam’, I would have lacked a bit of motivation”

MADRID, 10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios said that having won the Wimbledon ‘Grand Slam’ this Sunday against Serbian Novak Djokovic would have taken away “a little motivation” because he would have reached “the top” in tennis.

“I feel like if I had won that ‘Grand Slam,’ I think I would have lacked a little bit of motivation, to be honest. If I had come back for other tournaments, like the 250 and so on, it would have cost me a lot. I would have reached the top of what that can be achieved in tennis,” Kyrgios said.

The Australian played his first final of a ‘big’, something that has taken him 10 years in his career. “But my level is there. I feel like if you look at what Novak has done to other opponents, it’s not a good feeling,” he explained.

Kyrgios surprised the seven-time Wimbledon winner and 21st Grand Slam winner by winning the first set of the match. “People probably expected something to happen to me today. But I came out in the first set and it seemed like I was the one who had played a lot of finals. I think I handled the pressure pretty well,” he said.

“I felt at home. I’ve lost this match but I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel like there’s a lot of weight on my shoulders all the time when I walk out on the tennis court, now it’s freed up and I feel amazing.” It’s the best I’ve felt in two weeks,” he said.

About his rival, the Australian was full of praise. “You have to be a great athlete, mentally and physically, to win one of these things. I think eight people have won this title since I was born. It shows that physically and mentally he is another beast,” he explained about Djokovic.

“I congratulate Federer, Djokovic and Nadal. These guys, what they run must be crazy. And that’s, to me, the sign of a champion. That’s what they deal with, too, and then being able to perform, is unbelievable,” he said.
