Australia and Russia are the first two semifinalists of the ATP Cup after beating Britain and Argentina in Thursday's session. Alex de Minaur and Nick Kyrgios beat the British Jamie Murray and Joe Salisbury (3-6, 6-3 and 18-16) in the decisive doubles that gave the Aussies the pass, while Daniil Medvedev was decisive against Diego Schwartzman ( 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3) to do the same with the Russians.
The order of the doubles Lleyton Hewitt changed and the play went perfectly to the Australian captain. With Kyrgios and De Miñaur on track after playing their doubles matches, Australia went with everything for the established couple of the youngest of the Murray and Salisbury.
And the team that is playing with the support of its public and motivated by the tragedy of the fires in their country could not go better. Despite losing the first set, logical fatigue through Nick but especially Alex, Kyrgios and De Miñaur were gradually entering the game until they tied the British and then beat them in a super tie-break of 34 points, four balls match for Great Britain and five for the Aussies.
A couple who managed to lift the last ball of Murray and Salisbury, with his serve, then break their service twice and already at point 34 tie the Kyrgios serve and lifted the entire Sydney center. From Spain-Belgium will leave its rival in the semifinals of the ATP Cup, in what can be a duel in the top in case of being the Spanish team, because none will then have lost any tie before.
This rounded an Australian morning that began with Kyrgios' incontestable victory over Cam Norrie by a double 6-2. With the head centered, as he has been in everything that goes on in the tournament, and more motivated than ever before his people, the number two aussie is showed his best tennis to leave no option to the British.
1-0 and De Miñaur's turn, which however was not able to repeat his partner's deed. He tried to take the game against Dan Evans to three sets, but in the two tie-breaks that there was the English was much better, with a powerful serve and took both by an overwhelming 7-4 and another 7-2 to force the tiebreaker of doubles. A game that had everything and then yes, grabbed Australia to lift an entire country and stand in the semifinals of the ATP Cup.
Russia had it easier, which only had to resort to individuals to get rid of Argentina. Khachanov won Pella in the first duel (6-2 and 7-6 (4)), so that their leader, Medvedev, would be stronger than Schwartzman (6-4, 4-6 and 6-3). Finally, in an inconsequential doubles match, Gabashvili and Kravchuk finished rounding the Russian quarters by winning 7-6 (5) and 6-4 to the Albiceleste couple of Gonzalez and Molteni.
As was already the case in the Davis Cup, Marat Safin's are among the top four, although this time they get stronger thanks to the presence of the world number 5. A Medvedev who has won the four duels he has played in this ATP Cup and threatens to give the big bell in the renewed championship that is being played in Australia. Serbia against Canada will leave their rival for a place in the grand final of Sydney.
