Kvitova takes the title in Berlin and Ostapenko reigns in Birmingham

MADRID, 25 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova has conquered the title of the Berlin tournament, in the WTA 500 category and played on grass, after beating the Croatian Donna Vekic in the final (6-2, 7-6(6)), while the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko has been crowned in Birmingham (United Kingdom), WTA 250 and also on grass, beating the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (7-6 (8), 6-4).

Kvitova, a two-time Wimbledon champion (2011 and 2014), won the sixth trophy of her career on grass and the 31st overall, which places her behind only the American Venus Williams (49) as the player with the most titles among the players in asset.

The world number nine dropped just eight points on her serve in the first set, canceling out the only break chance she faced. In the second set, despite starting 3-1 down, she signed a break that forced the ‘tie-break’, from which she emerged victorious.

For his part, Ostapenko won the second grass-court title of his career, after Eastbourne 2021, and the first trophy since February, where he had been crowned in Dubai.

The Latvian, number 17 in the ranking, closed the first set after winning the sudden death. In the second, in which she opened promisingly 5-1, she suffered after Krejcikova – who returns to the Top 10 on Monday – won three straight games, but ended the clash with her serve.
