Klopp on his future as Germany coach: “It’s not completely ruled out”

LIVERPOOL (UNITED KINGDOM), 4 Jan. (dpa/EP) –

The German coach of Liverpool, Jürgen Klopp, has left in the air this Wednesday the possibility that in the future he will become Germany’s soccer coach, indicating that although “it is not totally ruled out”, he first has to “fit in”, since that until now “has not been so”.

“I have already said it before: it is not totally ruled out that I become a national coach at some point. But it has to fit. And so far it has not been like that,” the coach said in an interview with the German newspaper Sport Bild.

Klopp was once again considered one of the main candidates for the position of Germany coach after the debacle of the German team at the World Cup in Qatar, from which he said goodbye after winning a single game in the group stage. However, the German Football Federation kept Hansi Flick in his position.

“I don’t want to give the impression that this is the last job I would like to do. There are also worse things than being mentioned as a possible national coach,” he said. However, he assured that, for the moment, his commitment is with Liverpool. “When the contract at Liverpool ends, then I definitely won’t do anything for a year. Then we’ll see,” he said.

The German coach, who has a contract with the English club until mid-2026, defined himself as an “extremely responsible” person, and therefore cannot leave his position at Liverpool in any way. “I couldn’t just say: I’m leaving here now,” he explained.

In any case, Klopp said he continued to consider the national coach as the right person for the job, and that he took the right players for the World Cup in Qatar. “There aren’t so many alternatives in some positions in the national team. In the future you have to provide the national team with as many great players as possible. I’m sure Hansi will do really well,” he concluded.
