King Charles III will be crowned on May 6 at Westminster Abbey.

The Buckingham Palace has announced this Tuesday the day on which Charles III will be officially named the new King of England. It will be on Saturday, May 6, 2023, eight months after the death of his mother, Elizabeth II. “The Ceremony will see His Majesty King Carlos III crowned together with the Queen Consort,” reads the official Twitter account. It will take place in Westminster Abbey.

Preparations for the ceremony have already begun and it is being adapted to the tastes and desires of the new monarch. To begin with, its traditional duration will be shortened and it will go from three hours (which lengthened his mother’s) to just one. For this, old and long rituals will be suppressed, such as the delivery of gold bars to the monarch. The guest list will also be reduced and it is estimated that the 8,000 who accompanied then-Princess Elizabeth will drop to 2,000 on this occasion.

The 1762 gold State coach, which was renovated for the queen’s Platinum Jubilee, will be part of the coronation procession but attendees will have a lighter dress code. There will be more religious and cultural diversity and William, the new Prince of Wales and heir to the throne, is expected to take an active part in the ceremony.
