Kenin, Keys and Konta sweep at their premieres; Venus, removed

Three of the top favorites of the US Open women's draw, Sofia Kenin (2nd), Madison Keys (7th) and Johanna Konta (9th) began their journey in the tournament with comfortable victories.

The American Kenin, this year's Australian Open champion who disappointed a few days ago at the Cincinnati Open, swept the Belgian, semi-finalist in New York in 2009, Yanina Wickmayer (double 6-2). She will face Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the second round. The also american Masidon Keys, finalist in 2017, gave a good account of the Hungarian Timea Babos (double 6-1) and they will be seen with the Spanish Bolsava. And the british Konta suffered a bit more to lower her compatriot Heather Watson (76 (7) and 6-1). He will meet the Romanian Sorana Cirstea.

Amanda Anisimova (22nd), junior champion in 2017, recovered from a bad last week to beat Bulgarian Viktoria Tomova 7-5 by a double and earn the right to compete Thursday against American guest Katrina Scott. The Chinese Shuai Zhang (25th) did not have the same luck, who lost to the Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure 4-6, 6-3 and 6-2). Ons Jabeur (27th) continues to be sweet in 2020 and she showed it by winning the Polish Kawa 6-2, 7-6 (6). The Tunisian will meet the Estonian Kanepi. Sloane Stephens (26th), a 2017 champion who has had a poor year, did not disappoint in New York with her 6-3 double win over Romania's Buzarnescu. Now she will face the Belarusian Govortsova. Aryna Sabalenka (5th), who has seven Grand Slams in a row as seed and made her best result in a major (eighth) at the US Open, beat the French Dodin (7-6 (1) and 6-4) to meet in the second round with Victoria Azarenka, the most recent Cincinnati champion who beat the Austrian Haas 6-1, 6-2. Veronika Kudermetova (29th) could not with the Polish emerging Iga Swiatek, who won by a double 6-3 and will cross with Vickery. Maria Sakkari saved the furniture against the Swiss Voegele (6-3, 3-6 and 7-5) and crossed with Pera. And Donna Vekic (18th) did the same against Krystina Pliskova, whom she beat by a tight 3-6, 7-6 (6) and 6-4 to meet the Romanian Tig.

Venus, record and elimination; Clijsters KO

Venus Williams could not celebrate her 22nd participation in the US Open, a record figure, with a victory, because she was surprised by Czech Karolina Muchova (6-3 and 7-5). The American, a true tennis legend and two-time champion in New York, could not become the third player to win a match in the tournament with 40 or more years. And that could equal the match with break up in the second set, but Muchova came back and took the victory. In the second round she will meet the Russian Kalinskaya. Another tennis legend, the reborn Belgian Kim Clijsters, 37, could not pass the first round although she was excited about that possibility after winning the first set against Russia's Alexandrova (21st), who later imposed his best physique and his youth to overcome: 3-6, 7-5 and 6-1. It will be seen with McNally.
