American Sofia Kenin, fourth in the world, said goodbye to Australia this year when she gave up her debut in the Phillip Island Trophy tournament to the young Aussie Olivia Gadecki, 18 years old and without ranking, by 2-6, 7-6 (4) and 6-4.
Kenin had signed up for this tournament, category 250, after giving up his champion crown in the first 'major' of the season, in the second round, against the Estonian Kaia Kanepi, and after receiving an invitation at the last minute.
Gadecki had never faced a player ranked among the 200 in the world before, but opened her career with a victory over a Grand Slam champion in two hours and 28 minutes. The Spanish Paula Badosa was also enrolled in the tournament, who finally decided to return to Europe.
