Keely Hodgkinson to miss remainder of 2024 with ‘small injury’

LONDON, Aug. 22 (dpa/EP) –

British athlete Keely Hodgkinson, the new champion of the women’s 800 metres at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, announced on Thursday that “a small injury” will prevent her from continuing to compete for the remainder of this season, despite having planned to run in the next Diamond League meetings in September.

“No more races for me! Unfortunately I suffered a small injury, but we achieved everything I hoped for this year. Thank you for all the love and support! See you on the track next year,” the 22-year-old posted on Instagram.

Hodgkinson, who has won all nine of her 800m races this year, returned from France to training and set out to break the world record of 1:53.28, which has stood since it was set on 26 July 1983 by Czechoslovakian Jarmila Kratochvilova in Munich, Germany.

However, that milestone will have to wait for the Briton until next year at the earliest. She will also be looking to improve on her two previous World Championship silver medals, as another edition will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from 13 to 21 September 2025.
