The American golfer Kathy Whitworth died at the age of 83 on Christmas Eve, as reported by the ‘Ladies Professional Golf Association’ (LPGA), an organization that published the words of her partner, Bettye Odle, announcing the death.
“It is with a loving heart that we inform everyone of the passing of the winningest golfer in history, Kathy Whitworth. She passed away suddenly on Saturday night while celebrating Christmas Eve with family and friends. Kathy left this world the way she she lived her life, loving, laughing and making memories,” Bettye Odle said in a statement released by the LPGA.
Whitworth holds the record for victories on the same professional circuit with a total of 88 wins, a record that has not been reached on the men’s circuit either. Tiger Woods is the only active golfer to come close to the mark, with 82 wins.
In addition, she was the first woman to surpass $1 million in prize money on the LPGA Tour. In total, she earned more than $1.7 million in her career. The player, born in 1939 in Monahan, lifted her first title in 1962, celebrating a total of six majors throughout her career. A career so successful that it allowed him to enter the Golf Hall of Fame in 1982.
“The world of golf and the world in general lost one of its most incredible women. Kathy was a champion in the truest sense of the word, both on and off the course. In the short time I spent with Kathy, I really stayed with her. impressed by her and her approach to the sport and to life.
