Karla Sofía Gascón closes her X account after the controversy by former tweets

The Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón He has deactivated his X account this Friday after the reappearance of a series of old tweets in which he made offensive comments about Islam and George Floyd. The interpreter, who recently made history by becoming the first ‘trans’ Oscar -nominated woman, has denounced a hate campaign against her and has apologized for her words of the past: “I cannot consent to this hatred campaign affecting my family”.

Through a statement, Gascon explained the reasons behind his decision to leave the social network: “I’m sorry, but I can’t continue consenting that this hate and misinformation campaign affects my family or me more,” he said. “At them I close my X account.”

The actress has also reported having received death threats, insults and personal attacks after the viralization of her old messages: “I was not aware of having written something negative.” In his defense, Gascón has assured that he has always used his social networks as a personal space for reflection and creation, without anticipating that his publications would be analyzed with a magnifying glass in the future: “I have always used my social networks as a daily basis, reflections or Notes, to later create stories or characters, not as something to be scrutinized until the last of its 140 characters, “he explained.

Likewise, he has insisted that his intention has never been to promote hate and that, throughout his life, he has defended the rights of various minorities: “Perhaps my words are not correct, many times due to ignorance or by pure mistake, I ask forgiveness again if someone has ever felt offended or in the future. “

The reappearance of old tweets

The scandal broke out after several American media rescued messages that Gascon published in 2020, in which he made derogatory comments on different groups. Among them, there was one in which he affirmed: “How many more times history will have to expel the Moors of Spain.”

Other publications with racist and xenophobic content were also disseminated, such as one in which he ironized about the Chinese vaccine against COVID-19.

Apologies that do not stop the controversy

Hours before closing his account, Gascon had already published a statement through the magazine Varietyin which he regretted the impact of his words: “As a member of a marginalized community, I know this suffering very well and I regret having caused pain.” Despite its apologies, the controversy has continued to grow, with divided opinions between those who consider their regret genuine and those who believe that the damage is already done.

With a promotion professional after his Oscar nomination, it remains to be seen how this controversy will affect his career and his relationship with the film industry.
