The Spanish fencer Judith Rodríguez has been proclaimed champion in the Wheelchair Fencing World Cup held in Sao Paulo (Brazil), by beating the South Korean Hyo Kyeong Kwon (15-13) in the final.
In the first round, the Galician athlete recorded four wins and one loss and passed the group stage in which she was paired with the British Gemma Collis, the Thai Duean Nakprasit, the French Brianna Vide, the Brazilian Rudineia Manica and the South Korean Hyo Kyeong Kwon.
In the elimination rounds, she first beat the Brazilian Carminha Oliveira (15-5) and then the South Korean Seung Ri Shin (15-11), before getting rid of the British Gemma Collis (15-9) in the semifinals. In the final she defeated Hyo Kyeong Kwon (15-13).
Precisely, the South Korean was the executioner of the other Spanish in competition, Begoña Garrido, who reached the round of 32 but fell 15-8 to Kwon.
In the first weapon of the World Cup, in foil, Judith Rodríguez finished fifth and Begoña Garrido twelfth. Judith Rodríguez’s triumph in Sao Paulo represents the best result at the international level in Paralympic fencing in the last twelve years.
Rodríguez suffered the amputation of his right leg in 2018 after suffering a traffic accident when he was returning home from participating in the Spanish Club Championship that was played in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid) and in which he had won the team silver.
