Juan Román Riquelme, new president of Boca Juniors

MADRID, 18 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The former Argentine soccer player Juan Román Riquelme will be the next president of Boca Juniors after winning the elections of the xeneize entity over the duo made up of the former president of Argentina and Boca Mauricio Macri and Andrés Ibarra.

The former FC Barcelona and Villarreal player, who headed the official candidacy, with the until now maximum leader, Jorge Amor Ameal, as vice president, obtained more than 14,000 more votes than the opposition duo made up of Macri – president of the club between 1995 and 2007 – and Ibarra, who was running as a presidential candidate on the ticket.

The current president of Argentina, Javier Milei, a Boca fan, went to La Bombonera to vote and announced his support for Ibarra. In total, 43,367 members exercised their right to vote, a record in the history of Argentine football.

According to the Argentine media, Diego Martínez, who just a few days ago left the Huracán bench, will be the next xeneize coach, taking over from interim Mariano Herrón, who took command after the departure of Jorge Almirón.

As a Boca player, Riquelme won three Copa Libertadores (2000, 2001 and 2007), four Apertura tournaments, one Clausura, one Argentine Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one Recopa Sudamericana. With him as vice president, a position he held until now, the team has won six titles.
