José Donato Pes Pérez, former referee of the First Division, dies

The former international referee José Donato Pes Pérez, who played for 13 seasons in the highest category of Spanish football, has died at the age of 79, the Technical Committee of Referees (CTA) of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed this Saturday. .

“The Technical Committee of Referees of the RFEF regrets the death of former international referee José Donato Pes Pérez. The Aragonese referee played in the First Division for 13 seasons. We want to show our condolences to family and friends. RIP”, he announced.

The man from Zaragoza made his debut in the First Division in the 1977-78 season and refereed games until the 1989-90 academic year, directing a total of 128 games. In addition, he also delivered justice in duels of the European Cup and the UEFA Cup.

Pes Pérez acquired international fame by sending off Diego Armando Maradona in a derby against RCD Espanyol in the 1983-84 campaign, when the Argentine was playing for Luis César Menotti’s FC Barcelona, ​​all after a direct red card against the parakeet Miguel Ángel .
